I think I have, or had, some sort of virus.?

On my control panel, I had this symbol that had the letters AV with a red question mark in a yellow bubble, and when I click on it, it would say update failed. I'm about....95% sure that it was some sort of virus, so I did a virus scan with spydoc, the free version, and with my at%26t protection program. Both finished scans, however, that logo was still there. Than 5 minutes later, I press it again and the logos gone. I don't know what it was, I'm not even sure it was a virus, I just think that because I googled the name and I saw on a board someone mentioned it was a virus. My problem is that, it just disappeared, I don't know where it went, do you think my computer still has problems with that virus and its somewhere else now, or am I done with it?
