Risks of Ripping DVDs?

It seems that while today's DVDs do have copyright protection on them, this protection is still easily by-passed with sophisticated software that lets you rip movies from a DVD disk to your computer (in xvid/mkv/divx/etc format).

Besides the fact that it's illegal, and (perhaps) unethical, are there technical "traps" aimed at catching people who do rip DVDs illegally?

That is, if a person rents a movie from Blockbuster, rips it, and brings it back, can anybody (e.g. Blockbuster) tell he has ripped the movie (assuming he's not sharing it online)? Does it leave a physical trace on the DVD? Or does it leave trojans on your computer that "call home" when the DVD is illegally ripped or anything similar?

hah, first-timer's guilt ^_^

Once you've done it the second time, you won't have these kinds of worries. It is illegal to copy their movies, but if you're not sharing with anyone, it's fine. Besides, they can't find out whether or not you have copied their DVDs. There's no software that can be used to inspect this.

If you're going to copy DVDs, i'd recommend DvdFab Platinum. If you don't want to buy their product, use DvdFAb Free version.

Nothing. Ripping a movie is just like watching it on a DVD player... as far as i know it's impossible.. they would find out if you start selling the pirated DVDs or start giving them to friends randomly.. thats risky.. other than that.. they wont find out
nope.

all ripping does is a complete read of the dvd. the disk itself has no way of distinguishing this from any other read. Dont know where u heard this but it just aint true.
no you cannot get in trouble the only problem you will have is laughing to had in the movies lol enjoy buddy!
They simply cant.
Just keep it to yourself
