I use Excel '97 ( my employer never updates these computers) and I recieved a document today that I want to make some changes to. The problem is that it will not let me merge cells in the document. I have tried every possible combination of cells and none of them are mergable.
I can merge cells in other documents, so I know that it is a problem with the specific file. I have made sure that there is no protection on the file. A few other bits of information on this particular file that are somewhat different from others are that the "Format %26gt; Sheet %26gt; Background. . ." "Tools %26gt; Protection %26gt; Protect Sheet. . . ", and "Tools %26gt; Protection %26gt; Protect Workbook. . ." options are greyed out (meaning i cannot use those options either)

1. Congrats on being the first person I've seen who types there questions in English and actually gives full details on the problem.
2. Is your workbook shared? According to the help file, when a workbook is shared you cannot merge cells, amongst other things. In a test, I shared a workbook and selected the box to allow changes by more than one user at a time. After doing that, all of the items that you named became grayed out.
