Problem with memory...?

my computer had 256mb ddr ram...and i upgraded it to 640mb ram..yet my comuter works slowly..i think just like the effect of a 256mb ram...what do i do..i installed norton 2006 in my pc..is it slowing my computer..but still 640mb can withstand norton processes i guess...anyway iam thinking of installing avg free edition instead of norton..do u think its wise to do that..will the protection level come down..or is there any step left to do if we increase ram..please suggest a way

the amount of RAM might not be the problem but the RAM its self has a speed so even though you have more RAM it might be slower RAM

Norton is your main problem. Uninstall Norton and download the free addition of AVG. ACG runs great, updates itself and protect your computer very well. 3 years of AVG and no viruses.
The way I have this figured you had 1 stick of 128Mb and 2 sticks of 256Mb RAM. Try removing the stick of 128Mb. Some mobos only use matched sets of memory sticks, i.e. same speed, same size, same manufacturer. AVG will use less of your systems resources than Norton. I had Norton for quite some time until I discovered that it did not catch several Trojans in the system32 files even though there were regular scans with updated Norton. Switched to AVG Free and it cleaned out several more viruses that Norton had missed. Did the computer ever recognize the stick of 128Mb of RAM? Did you run a bootable copy of Memtest 86+ to test the memory for errors? Also consider downloading Ad-Aware, Spy-bot, and Windows Defender. All are free and will help remove the nasties from your computer. Do remove unused or unnecessary programs and temporary Internet files from the computer, then do a defrag. That will speed things up.
Take the RAM out then go to RAM guy they will let you know what you need for your computer.
